No less than 64 civilians were killed in a police operation targeting the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's history.

Four security agents were among those killed during the security mission in the Alemão and Penha districts, government representatives said. In excess of 80 individuals were taken into custody.

Intense confrontations erupted when around 2,500 law enforcement officers entered the area on Tuesday morning. The Red Command reacted using shooting, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, officials confirmed.

The International human rights organization stated it felt "horrified" by the law enforcement raid, demanding "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Mission Consequences

The area of favelas close to the aerial transportation hub is regarded as the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.

Government representatives stated at least 50 of the deceased were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Numerous individuals were hurt, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Local Reaction

Locals have described the mountainous region - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "war zone" since the raid started.

Access ways continue shut throughout the region.

Gang Growth

The criminal network has been increasing their control throughout the region, increasing drug trafficking routes and control of the hillside favelas.

Rio's police reported in excess of 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were captured in the mission, in addition to dozens of firearms.

Operation Background

The coordinated mission by different law enforcement agencies comes after a twelve-month inquiry.

Many of the individuals are thought to be participants in an organization from the Pará state who are currently hiding in Rio de Janeiro.

Broader Context

Major law enforcement actions are not uncommon in the country prior to major international events in the South American nation.

The United Nations climate conference the environmental summit is taking place in the northern urban center in November.
