Edwards along with Gary O'Neil are two of the early candidates under consideration to succeed the former manager as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Pereira was sacked on Sunday after the squad's 10-match without a victory start to the top-flight season.

And both candidates - each of whom have previous links to the club - are part of the options to be evaluated by the club leadership.

The manager is presently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a potential hurdle to his appointment at Wolves' stadium.

Nevertheless the ex- Luton Town manager - who made more than 100 of games for the club during his time as a player - is said to be a leading contender for the position.

The 42-year-old is reportedly enjoys backing from the club board as they begin the process of appointing a fresh head coach.

O'Neil is also emerging as a surprise contender, even though he would be a surprising appointment considering he was sacked by Wolves in the previous winter.

The ex- West Ham United midfielder is currently unemployed meaning Wolves would not need to pay any compensation.
